Hong Kong Loves Weird English Names

Inquisitive, enterprising and resourceful journalist Joyce Man has written an engaging piece to US readers about "weird" names adopted by Hongkongers (see below and link here).

The comments section below the piece is also enlightening.

Recommended reading to anyone interested in novel names.

Hong Kong Loves Weird English Names

Devil. Whale. Chlorophyll, Violante, Treacle — you name it, Hong Kong probably has someone who goes by it. The former British colony is obsessed with weird English names. Unusual appellations have been found on people of all kinds. The secretary for justice is Rimsky Yuen ...

Declaration: Joyce Man contacted HKSAR Blog for comments to be put in the article.

  4. Anson, Bobo and Coco, etc. are quite popular in HK. They may be weird form foreigner's view, but Hongkonger don't think strange about it. I remember the English homework book of a publisher used Bobo and Coco as the characters' names.

On the other hand I think Whale, Chlorophyll, Never, etc. are quite strange, while Uriah is not strange at all.

  5. Thank you Anon. Yes, the socio-cultural aspect plus an individual's ignorance and innocence of English knowledge all contribute to which novel names are considered commonplace or rare.

I find this fascinating, especially when compared with other societies such as Singapore, Taiwan, etc.
